Committee Disharmony Empty Committee Disharmony

Post by anne stewart Thu Mar 22, 2012 8:24 am

It was noticeable that attendance at the Branch Meeting on 19th March was reduced.
The previous meeting was conducted more like a court appearance centred around one member. This left a bad taste in some members mouths my own included. But I don't believe that that was the main reason for discontent among the membership. It is very clear the elected committee are not pulling together. This has been apparent over the last 5 meetings that I've attended. Point scoring and squabbling are playground tactics and need to stop. The same people on the committee did work well together at one time and only they know what is happening behind the scenes that changed that. But whatever the reasons they need to find a way through it and get a resolve. Individual members getting involved in the fray is not helpful it only serves to divide the membership. I don't believe that resignations from the committee are the answer either. We need the combined experience of the committee members to get where we need to be. They need to wipe the slate clean, start afresh and work together in harmony for the good of all. They need to do this quickly or risk causing further damage. The meetings should be structured and focused on the matters on the agenda. We need to come away from the meeting feeling it was purposeful. Members need to be mindful that the committee do any work on our behalf in their own time, for no remuneration. If we had to pay them for the hours they have already contributed over the last few years, they would be rich men. But Every member round the table should be willing to support the committee and help where needed. We can't leave everything to a few people who need to make a living the same as the rest of us. I do hope this does not fall on deaf ears as we are on the cusp of getting accreditation. If this happens we need to be focusing now on an action plan, what issues we prioritise. There is so much work to be done.

Anne,Very good post....It's just the nature of democracy that different people have different views on certain subjects..There will always be disagreements in any group, but now that Accreditation has been Approved by GCC, we need to work even closer together to achieve the aims and objectives of our members...The committee are having an unofficial meeting on Monday to discuss these very same problems and work out our future direction...

Committee Disharmony Empty Re: Committee Disharmony

Excellent post Anne and it gets to the heart of the matter.
I was over the moon when we gained accreditation but the euphoria was soon dispelled when I read some of the comments made on the Glasgow taxi forum.
These comments bring the Union into disrepute and airing dirty washing (allegedly) in a public forum.
As the original instigator of the mandate system I feel content that it accelerated the recognition process to a successful conclusion. All this would have not happened without the support of the small but dedicated team that went round the ranks and collected the signatures.
This initiative did not meet with approval from a certain section of the Union but it was democratically adopted and all must accept the branch decisions.
At the Council meeting I had a long conversation with the GTL secretary Mr Dunabie and extended the olive branch to him but he was not biting and after their AGM an attempt must be made to Unite the trade.
Back to the disharmony---most of the EC are attempting to solve this problem but ALL parties have got to make an effort. Meetings are all about moving forward and should not be an attempt to point finger`s at unpaid EC members who work tirelessly for the good of all in the the Union and the general trade, so if you want to create disharmony and discontent just do the easy thing go somewhere else and spout your vitriol Smile

Committee Disharmony Empty Unhelpful comments on the other forum

Post by george kelly Mon Apr 09, 2012 4:08 pm

It seems to me that an ex-committee member has a very short memory despite previously being on the EC he seems content to blame everyone else for the inordinate time it took to gain accreditation.
He now seems content to sit in the background and stir up dissention among not only members but anyone who will listen to his rantings and to create a conspiracy where there is none. While he did not agree (or help ) with the mandate idea it proved successful in a very short time compared to the extended period when he was on the EC. Democracy is not perfect but if you subscribe to it you must abide by the majority decisions until a better method comes along.
I noticed that he commented on a post regarding an attempt to set up a branch of the RMT and said that he was in _(QUOTE I`M IN) perhaps now it is time he followed his statement by action and resigned gracefully.
The EC and the sub committees do invaluable work and all free of charge and its time we all got back on track and attended to the important issues that are at present affecting the Trade ie pirating, low tarrif, lack of rank space , and the return of a permanent police presence etc Sad
